Web 2.0 commercial aspects

I start this discussion as kind of provocative question because I'd like to see all kind of controversial statements here :)

When I see web 2.0 services, I sometimes ask myself: "Must it be free of charge because it's web 2.0?"

I have seen discussions on the Internet where people ask if they would pay for a social network like facebook or linkedin. A lot of people just say "no, not at all". So the general notion seems to be "if it's on the Web and if it's web 2.0, it must be free".

In former times we had the same problem with the Internet in general. People thought, because it's online, it must be free. Nowadays you can find a lot of sites where you can download shareware that you have to pay for, even if it's available on the Internet only. People start accepting this business model.

So, what do you think? Is Web 2.0 a synonym for "gratis on the Web"?

What do you think about payment models like "freemium" where you get basic a basic service for fee but have to pay for additional features?

What do you think about free models that use advertising to monetize the service?
