The Future of the Free Web 2.0

Maybe you have already heard about the Ning approach to discontinue their free service. If not you can read about it here:

http://www.freetech4teachers.com/2010/04/ning-ends-free-networks-try-these.html

or here:

http://blog.ning.com/2010/04/an-update-from-ning.html

So, what do you think? Will there be free Web 2.0 in the future? Will we see this more often in the next months?

And what would you do if you would have a ning network (maybe you already have or had one). Would you pay for it to stay or would you leave and try to get your community over to another service that might discontinue their free service later on.

You make a good point Sukhpreet so let's think a bit further into the future. If all people who move away from ning to other free websites, could the same thing happen there?

If Facebook finds out that the traffic costs increase more than expected because they now get all the ning people, wouldn't it be evident for them to charge for their service too in the future?

Thanks Marian :)

Yes, it's possible that in future these free web 2.0 websites might go paid but then free options would always be available to us!

Now I believe that we have to be extra smart to keep an eye on the free options :)

Thank you starting this thread Marian. It is indeed very important to know that how many of us are willing to pay for Ning or for any other free web 2.0 application/ website.

In my case, I would prefer to leave Ning and I personally think that it's not a good idea to pay and stay when we have other free websites available like Facebook, Twitter and many more.
